We had small turnout on a warm spring day. While President Stephen was drinking brown liquor across the state of Kentucky, Birdman Broadfoot did an admirable job filling in. Hal had his work cut out for him. Hal had to find a substitute for Kirby White to open us, a substitute for Tim Pope to pray for us and a substitute for Fred Klinck to write this bulletin! Bruce Brown and Steve Stokes did an admirable job in their drafted roles. Guests included the President and Vice President of the Key Club of Terry Sanford who gave us an update on their Color Run spring fundraiser held this past Saturday.
Two additions to the prayer list, Ed Jackson is having a pacemaker installed April 22 and Merrilyn Bowman is recovering from a recent illness. George Holden and Danny Highsmith continue their recovery, and we hope to see them back soon.

United is the Way
Our own Scott Embrey brought us an update from the United Way of Cumberland County. Scott is approaching his second anniversary as Executive Director. Scott talked about the United Way’s focus on improving literacy rates in Cumberland County, literally from birth. In partnership with Cape Fear Valley and Womack Hospital, the United Way provides each newborn baby in these hospitals with a book- The Little Engine Who Could – and a membership in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. Last year they distributed over 10,000 books to our newborns. Last year United Way volunteers logged over 6,000 hours and distributed over $1 million in community grants and support for member non-profits. Thanks for the update and great job Scott!
Parting Shot
President Stephen’s son, Luke, told me a story about growing up in the Wheeler household. He remembered when he was 12-years-old Stephen sat him down at the kitchen table and said “Son, I better never, ever, hear that you are smoking. If I ever catch you smoking, it’s going to be a very bad day for you. To which Luke replied, “Hey lighten up Dad. When you were in the Fifth Grade you were smoking a pack a day.” Stephen replied, “That’s different, I was 19.
